Students to benefit from Tanya’s experience
| |
An outstanding First Class Honours Graduate
has returned to Northumbria to study and share tips and
advice with other students. |
|
Tanya Ong Yan Yan from IPG Penang, Malaysia, earned herself
a first class LLB in Law earlier this year, and was also awarded
the Oxford University Press Law Prize for being the top overseas
Law student at Northumbria.
In recognition of
her outstanding achievement,
Tanya was awarded a bursary by Northumbria University to return
to read LLM in Commercial
Law. As part of her
bursary, she will also act as a mentor and advisor to the University’s
new international law students.
Around 100 undergraduate
students come to
Northumbria’s Law School each year from
Malaysia, Bangladesh
and other Asian countries.
They study Law for two years in their home countries, and then
travel
to Northumbria to
complete their course.
Tanya came to Northumbria after beginning her studies in Penang,
although she is originally
from Kuala Lumpur.
Tanya will have her
own office in the school and will spend around four hours each
week mentoring international students who are in their final
year of Law. She will be dealing with general enquiries that
arise at the beginning of the academic year, will help students
find their feet and offer guidance on how to make the most
of their studies.
She said: “This is a great opportunity for me to give
something back to
the University, and I was honoured that I was considered for
the role. “
Tanya will be working
alongside LLB Programme
Leader Jonathan
Bainbridge, who said: “We
created this position
as we felt it would be
really useful for the students, and felt that Tanya was the
ideal person
for the role. Tanya
will be able to use her
own experience to help others make the most of their time at
Northumbria”
Prof Phillip Kenney,
Dean of the School
of Law, added: “Tanya is an outstanding
student and an excellent
role model. She has
a lot to offer, and I am certain that students will benefit
from her wisdom
and knowledge.”
