This study aims to investigate the role of personality information on perceptions of attractiveness. In particular the study aims to determine whether the importance of information regarding personality differs depending upon whether subjects are being rated as potential long term or short term partners. The study is aimed at persons aged 18-30.
You will first be asked to provide some demographic information. This information is entirely confidential and cannot be used to identify you. Only the research team will have access to the information you provide.
You will then be shown a series of five photographs, which you will then be shown a second time and asked to rate how attractive you think the images are. You will be asked to make these judgements in one of two conditions. You will either be asked to rate them for attractiveness as a short term casual romantic partner, or as a long term romantic partner.
You will then be shown the images a third time and asked to rate them once more for attractiveness. This time however, the models are accompanied by a list of adjectives. We asked friends of the models to describe their friend's best and worst qualities. The qualities that recurred most for each of the models are presented alongside their photograph. Please rate them for attractiveness once more whilst considering this personality information.
All data collected in this investigation will be completely anonymous and accessible only to the research team. The research team will not be able to identify you personally from your data. You will be assigned a code number at the end of the experiment. If you wish to withdraw your data from the investigation you are entirely free to do so by simply contacting the research team at [email protected] and quoting your reference number.
All information and data gathered during this research will be stored in line with the Data Protection Act and will be destroyed 3 years following the conclusion of the study. During that time the data may be used by members of the research team only for purposes appropriate to the research question, but at no point will your personal information or data be revealed. Insurance companies and employers will not be given any individual's information or test results, and nor will we allow access to the police, security services, social services, relatives or lawyers, unless forced to do so by the courts.
