Statutory Interpretation Exercise
Instructions
The purpose of this exercise is to explore the use of the rules of statutory interpretation and to introduce you to a problem question. The exercise seeks to demonstrate how you should approach a problem question.
Having previously studied the Reading an Act of Parliament exercise, click on Question on the navigation bar on the left hand side of the screen and consider the issues of statutory interpretation raised by the question. Make notes as to what you think are the issues and how a court may solve these by use of the rules of statutory interpretation.
Once you have done this click on Question Analysed, again on the navigation bar on the left hand side of the screen. You will find the question with highlighted text in blue and red.
Click on the blue highlighted text and this will indicate the significance of the highlighted part of the question and will give you information on the rules of statutory interpretation raised.
Click then on each of the four scenarios highlighted in red for guidance
on (i) the issues raised and (ii) how to use the rules of statutory interpretation
to resolve the issues.
