Travelling to Newcastle by Air

Newcastle International Airport is served by many airlines providing direct links from top international and UK destinations, and is only 8 miles from the city centre. The airport is connected to the Metro system which is the quickest and easiest way to get to the city centre. Trains run every 5–15 minutes and the journey takes around 20 minutes.

Bus services, car hire and taxis are all also available at the airport and you can also pre-book car parking online before you travel. Visit the Newcastle Airport website for more information.

Travelling to Newcastle by Sea

The International Passenger Terminal at Royal Quays, North Shields is only 8 miles (11km) east of Newcastle city centre. It's the North of England's main sea link with Europe.

DFDS Seaways operate daily overnight crossings from Amsterdam (IJmuiden) in Holland throughout the year. Mini Cruise breaks to Newcastle/Gateshead and packaged short breaks to various destinations in the area are available.

Alternatively you can travel with your vehicle. IJmuiden can be easily reached from the rest of Holland, and also from Belgium, Denmark and Germany and France.

Buses operate from the terminal to Newcastle Central Station and the journey takes around 30 minutes. The nearest Metro station is Percy Main - a 15 minute walk from the terminal.

Travelling to Newcastle by Car

The A1(M) passes through Newcastle/Gateshead linking the area to London, the South, Scotland and major routes across the country. The A69 links west to Carlisle, the Lake District and, via the M6, to the South and West of England.

Central car parks are situated only a short distance from both routes and are well signposted.

Travelling to Newcastle by Rail

Direct rail services run from many UK cities to Newcastle Central Station. East Coast operate the East Coast mainline from London King's Cross to Scotland via Newcastle and the CrossCountry route links the region with Scotland, the Midlands and the South West. Northern Rail operate from Carlisle, Teesside and beyond, while TransPennine Express services run from Manchester, Liverpool and stations across Yorkshire. A new London King's Cross service to Sunderland is operated by Grand Central Trains.

Newcastle Central Station is within easy walking distance of many central destinations and is well connected by Metro, QuayLink, bus and taxi. Station facilities include travel information, left luggage, toilets, cafés, a bar and cash machines.

Getting about Newcastle

Once in Newcastle, travelling is easy. Newcastle city centre is compact and best seen on foot, while the Metro system offers fast, efficient travel around Newcastle and buses service the parts the Metro doesn't reach. The wheelchair friendly Quaylink buses run regularly along Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays; this service brings a modern, clean and environmentally friendly way to see the city.

Metro
The Metro system has been rated as one of the country‘s most efficient modes of transport and carries more than 37 million passengers a year. It is an ideal way to get to and from the airport as well as the Jesmond café bar scene and the coastal areas.

The Metro trains themselves have room for wheelchairs and buggies and have comfortable seating. You can buy your ticket at any Metro station, so have some change ready. Look out for the Metro Hopper which lets you travel in zone one all day, or Metro DaySaver which gives all day unlimted Metro travel. Bus Services
Bus services in Newcastle/Gateshead are plentiful and frequent and there are a wide variety of special travel tickets available including a Day Rover for unlimited travel by any form of public transport in Tyne & Wear, while the North East Explorer ticket can be used on public transport right across the North East region. Buy one on the day from bus drivers or in advance from Travelshops.
If you're visiting the Angel of the North why not take the unique Angel Bus (Go North East services 21 & 22) from Eldon Square Bus Station in Newcastle or Gateshead Interchange.

QuayLink
QuayLink buses offer a low-emission, high-frequency, accessible and easy-to-use service, and are the best way to get around central Newcastle/Gateshead. Routes connect the attractions and sights of Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays with Newcastle Central Station, Haymarket Bus Station and Gateshead Interchange. Ticket options include a single fare and an all-day ticket. Day Rover tickets, Transfare tickets, Network One Travel Tickets including zone one and MetroSaver season tickets including zone A are also valid on QuayLink.
